Tempera Painting

Tempera paint is an opaque, water-based paint that is an excellent entry point for young artists to learning color mixing and color theory. While the basics are taught, the fun is in the discovery of experimenting with the primary colors, black and white, and seeing the endless possibilities. Students also learn about brush size and paint strokes as they learn to paint their subject matter.

Foam Plate Printing

Art printing is a repetitive process with a variety of outcomes. It is a very freeing form of artmaking because it is very sharable. Children experience a lot of artistic discovery with printing making developing patterns, positive and negative space, and color interactions. Foam printing plates are an easy surface for young children to carve making it a wonderful introduction to printmaking.

Oil Pastel Drawing

Oil pastels are a drawing medium with fat, creamy tips. Because of the tip size, the act of mark making with the pastel is faster and less tedious than fine point materials. Students continue the skill of color mixing while adding line quality and compositional elements to their artwork. I often pair it with landscape or still-life drawing.

*This is not a comprehensive list of mediums that are taught, rather examples of projects from the past.
