High School
Mediums
Water Color Painting
With the medium of watercolor paint, the student transfers their knowledge of color mixing into this new material and adds the component of transparent washes. Students learn how to create depth of field by adjusting the brightness or richness of the paint wash. Additionally, they learn about how to use stroke direction and size to create visual texture.
Color Pencil Drawing
Exploring the full range of what a few colored pencils can create, students use a motif to generate a surface pattern design based upon radial symmetry. Students discover the endless color mixing they can employ to create art with balance, repetition, and emphasis. Students consider geometric versus organic designs and choose the concept that resonates with them most. Through a series of steps, what begins as a few lines becomes a complex, colorful design. Many students find this unit eye-opening, relaxing, and a lesson about life.
